October 6 Meeting Notes

Attendence: Meghan Adams, Sarah Brown, Taylor Childs, Kevin Clause, Dakota Gibson, Cecily Parell, and Michael Smith were absent. We have one new member, Kaitlyn Thiede. The Council is now locked, meaning that no new members can join.As Michael was Absent, Anastacia was tonight's acting President.

- Harry Potter Pizza Discussion:A display has been placed in the YAZ, and flyers will be distributed to MHS for this event. We have tentatively rescheduled to Monday Oct. 19, due to expected poor turn out if the event were on the Friday of Fall Break.Unfortunately, Monday will not work. We need to decide between Tuesday and Wednesday. It is noted that many churches meet on wednesday nights. Thoughts?

- Book Choice for Teen Book Club & Suzanne's reply for Invisible Monsters:
We cannot justify choosing such a graphic book as Invisible Monsters for a Teen Book Club, so our runner up, 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher, is now the pick. The book for October is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and November is The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie.

- Teen Coucncil Tee-Shirts:At the next meeting (November 3rd), members may submit designs for our Teen Council Tee Shirts. We voted to make them Tshirts as oppossed to long sleeved shirts.

- As Meghan was absent, we could not recieve updates from her.

- Great Pumpkin Fest:This event will be on Saturday, Oct. 24. It is a Friends of The Library fundraiser. We need people to rent booths to sell items, as well as 4+ Teen Council Members to volunteer to run the Children's Area. Members may also donate baked goods for the sale. It was noted that these funds could be allegated to negate the individual members paying for the Tshirts. Eric Frandsen's band will be preforming.

- Spring Programing/Teen Tech Week.Teen Tech Week is in March. We will view Book Trailers at our next meeting, and possibly make some to be aired at MHS during TTW.

- Issues from the Floor:

Suzanne: United Way called about the Youth Leadership Initiatives. Applicants who are selected would attend a Youth Leadership camp and be paired with an organization wishing to have a youth representitive on their board. Anyone interested should e-mail Suzanne.

Kyle: Meeting off base? The idea came up while Molly and I were at dinner. I thought it would be refreshing to meet somewhere other than the Children's Room sometimes. Hong Kong was suggested and approved by the group due to it's closeness and relative privacy. Members would of course have to pay for their own dinner. Suzane suggested this be an end-of-the-year meeting.

Suzanne: The Jazz from The Yaz. We voted to change the name to "The Abstract". This was unanimously approved by present members, and President Smith was telephoned to confirm. He approved. The next issue will run as The Abstract. It was noted that this coincides with our "new look".

- Removing Books from The YAZ:The Council removed a number of old, unread books from the Young Adult Zone.

Post with questions and comments, as always.

Teen Book Club Book Choice

Our next book for book club is 13 Reasons Why. I just can't justify doing Invisible Monsters at this time.

*Elections:
The following were chosen by Teen Council to serve in administrative positions:

Michael Smith, President
Anastacia Jensen, Vice President
Kyle Casteel, Scribe
Sarah Brown, Second Scribe

*Book Choice for Teen Book Club:
"Invisible Monsters" by Chuck Palahniuk was chosen as the next book. As it may not be approved by Suzanne, "13 Reasons Why" by Jay Asher is next in line.

*Activities for Teen Read Week:
A tape of Ms. Walker's Book Talks will be taped and aired on Mooresville High School's announcements to advertise for Read Week (Oct. 18-24)
Ideas presented to increase participation included:
-Independent Picks by the Teen Council and/or it's members
-Book Discussions
-Suggestion Box for Teen Book Club (it was noted that this is a good idea independent of Read Week)
-Food at events

An event was created tonight by Teen Council, a Movie/Book Night at the library after hours on the 23rd. We will be serving pizza and screeening "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", followed by a discussion comparing and contrastig the movie to the book. The screening is set to begin at 3:30.

*Program Updates:
-Oct. 16th: Mystery Dinner. This is limited to adults, as it is the first time the library has attempted such an event. If all goes well, it may be opened to teens in the future. Our very own Michael Smith and Caleb Taylor will be participating, however.
-Oct. 23rd: iGhost, the paranormal investigation team, will be visiting the library. This will follw the Movie/Book Night described above, in the Community Room.
Suzanne will be telling scary stories at the park following the events.

*New Jazz Look: The new look of the Jazz, our library's newsletter, includes real students at Moorseville, and is printed in color. The hope is that this will attract more students.

*Spring Programming:
Programs being continued as of this meeting:
-Teen Council
-Art Classes (now avaliable to all students 4-12)
-Knitting
-Teen Book Club (books will be chosen by Council, voted upon from Council ideas and the suggestion box)
The green crafts program will be decided upon at a later date.
Games for the Gaming Program will be kept/discarded based on turn out.
The Writing Workshop may be dropped or kept based on interest.
Anime/Manga Club has seen a declining interest. It may be dropped. The next movie being shown was picked, "Grave of the Fireflies".

Ideas, Questions, and Concerns may be posted here. I will make a note of what is deiscussed and bring it up at the next meeting so we may vote/discuss formally.
