Michael Smith was promoted from Vice President to Co-President with Anastacia Jensen. Sarah Brown remained scribe and Kyle Casteel remained 2nd scribe.

Minutes from the last meeting were passed out. Meeting minutes will be posted on the blog.

Suzanne submitted the report for the 2010 Teen Summer Reading Program (TSRP). This closes last year’s grant cycle.

Meghan gave a teen program update.
o The Mystery Dinner will be held next Saturday, October 9th. Attendees are to arrive a little before 6, and should let Meghan know ahead of time if they will be late. They should dress to their character. Hors devours will be served. The theme is Clue. It is currently full with a waiting list.
o College Funding Night will be held Thursday, November 18th, from 7:00-8:15 PM in the Community Room. This program is geared toward juniors and seniors. Parents are advised to attend as well. This program is aimed to help students nearing college explore funding options.

Suzanne gave an update on teen programs as well.
o The theme for this year’s Fall Reading Program is Teen’s Read. It has changed from last year. This year you must read nine books of at least 100 pages in length. Forms were passed out. Each completed form will be entered in a drawing to win an iPod. Logging will begin October 18th , the beginning of Teen Read week. It was brought to attention that we should get these forms out to the middle school and high school. Suzanne has already sent a form to a high school teacher.
o The RPG lock-in will be held November 12th. This year it is open to everyone and every genre of RPG. This year the lock-in will include Zombie Apocalypse, Steam Punk, and classic role playing. You do not have to know how to role play to attend. The planning meeting will be October 19th. If you plan, you will not be playing.

Our three goals for this year, to recap, are letter writing for free stuff, making a video to promote the library/TSRP, and writing one YAR grant for TSRP. We split into three committees to divide these tasks. Bold type indicates leader.

Letter Writing: Meghan, Kyle, Molly, Emily, Abby, Cecily, Danielle, and Elijah

Grant Writing: Sarah, Anastacia, Michael, and Catherine

Video Making: Suzanne, Keegan, Hanna, Caleb, Tyann, Luke, Brandon, and Jeff

The letter writing committee developed a list of businesses to send letters. They divided who would write to which company.

The grant writing committee wanted to replace the summer reading program theme “You are Here.” They presented a new theme, “A Whole New World.” They also divided up what parts of the grant each person would work on.

The video making group is going to enter a video into a contest using the theme “You are Here.” They plan to have people take pictures of themselves where they read with a red arrow (which they made) pointing to them.

The next Abstract will focus on the online presence of the library including YouTube, blogs, and Facebook.

The next teen council meeting will be held November 2nd. Suzanne is possibly going to buy the game “Werewolves of Wizard’s Manor.” It teaches role playing and is a fun game. Another game possibility is “Munchkin.” We will also watch the library video which promotes getting a library card. A question was brought to the table. Can we sell copies of the video under parodies for a fundraiser? We will decide on the theme for the 2010 TSRP and look at the catalogue for prizes. Applications need to be turned in!

Elections were held and the following were elected into an officer's position:
Anastacia J. / Michael S. / Sarah B. (in absentia) / Kyle C.

Suzanne went over the importance of paying attention during the meeting, not talking unless it is your turn, and how to find out when meetings are. You must attend at least 3 meetings this semester or you cannot continue in Teen Council in the Spring. You might want to think about getting a folder or a notebook dedicated to Teen Council to bring with you to meetings. Meetings are posted on the library's website at http://www.mooresvillelib.org/ (click on Calendar). Meetings are usually the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00-7:00 PM. Pizza is served at every meeting.

We have 3 goals for this year: Plan our 2011 Teen Summer Reading Program / Write Letters to Businesses to get free stuff for our 2011 Teen Summer Reading Program (TSRP) / Make a Video to promote the library and the TSRP.

Staying Connected:
o Email. You must have an email address THAT YOU CHECK to be a member of Teen Council. This is our primary method of communication mainly because not all parents allow their child to access Facebook.

o Facebook – befriend Suzanne Walker and get invited to the MPL Teen Council Group. We will also communicate via Facebook.

o Blog:
http://mooresvilleteens.blogspot.com. The Scribe will be responsible for putting our minutes on the blog. You are responsible for reviewing them.

o Twitter – we will not be using Twitter this year.

We did a Team Building activity and then opened the floor to discussion on ways to improve the library and programs to do for teens. Here were some program ideas:

Dance Parties
Dance Offs
Fashion Show
Talent Show
Trash Bag Fashion Show
Wrestling Program

And the suggestion that got the most discussion was having some great Harry Potter programs to celebrate the final two movies. We've settled on having a Yule Ball for middle school and high school students around January 21st and some kind of Harry Potter Festival in July open to all ages. More on these programs later.

It was also brought up that the library should have a YouTube Channel and that the library should blog. Meghan and Suzanne stated that the library already does all those things and it was suggested that the library advertise that fact more. We also discussed changing the colors of the Abstract.

We then did a team building exercise and then split up into two groups...One group focused on writing letters to business asking them for donations for our TSRP and the other group focused on finishing our final report for YAR for the TSRP from this past summer.

Ideas for things to ask businesses for are:

Books from 1/2 priced books
iPod
Netbook
Nintendo
Old School Nintendo Package
Camera
Computer
Cell Phone
Starbucks Gift Card
Borders Gift Card
Half Price Books Gift Card
Chinese Food Catering
Silly Bandz
iTunes Gift Cards

These minutes were recorded by Suzanne Walker
