December Minutes

Meeting Minutes
December 5, 2010

Tween Council met at 6 o’clock. They discussed the Carnival Grant and reviewed the grant application. They did not get it all filled out.

Co-president Michael Smith gave advice to the newer grant writers. His suggestions included reviewing their application many times and putting their presentation as a priority. Presentation suggestions included costumes and including a PowerPoint.

The theme for this summer reading program is Picture This: Back to the Books.

Summer reading programs were discussed. Teen summer reading programs are held on Tuesdays at one. The eight ideas included:
Avatar in 3-D
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Movie/Book discussion)
Movie Maker Program
Movie Themed Scavenger Hunt
Mad Tea Party (Alice in Wonderland)
Henna tattoos/ Bollywood movie
Narnia Medieval Society session
Special Effects Program

Special Programs include the Yule Ball, a murder mystery, and free yoga classes with Stacey Nelson.

A pool party is planned at the end of the summer for all the participants and family.

The Tween council left at 7. The Teen council then discussed the grant for the summer reading program. Teen Council was assigned to find one important fact about why it is important to read during the summer. Some helpful resources to find these statistics are the Indiana State Library and researching grant statistics for summer reading.

It was brought to attention that statistics of Mooresville High School’s dropping literacy scores should be removed from the grant since they have not improved as a result of this program.

One person was assigned to be in charge of each program. They will assist in planning, take attendance, and possibly do a survey at their assigned program. This will increase youth leadership in the summer reading program.

Prizes were discussed. Ideas for VIP Pass prizes include a smaller version of the iPad, Kindle/Nook, Netbook, iPod, or an Xbox Slim. Newegg.com was suggested as a cheaper source for electronics.

Five levels of prizes will be included in the summer reading program. One level may include a shoe keychain.
